Sports massage use specific techniques at certain times depending on when the massage is taking place.  Pre- event would concentrate on warming up and increasing blood flow with compression, shaking and stretching, a post-event would be helping aid recovery so different techniques such as broad strokes towards the heart.  During recovery, maintenance or if the athlete injures themselves then other specific techniques would be used address the concern and timing of treatment.

Deep tissue massage is similar to relaxation massage but with more pressure allowing to reach deeper levels of fascia, muscles, and tendons.  It is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension.

Remedial massage looks to find improper posture and correct it to alleviate and prevent pain and injury from occurring. Usually, the pain clients experience is from months or even years of continuous repetitive movements or poor posture.  The therapist does a postural assessment and range of motions to find shortened muscles and works on lengthening them to regain ideal postural alignment.  The client and therapist collaborate with each other over successive treatments incorporating massage, home stretching and strengthening exercises to return to proper postural alignment and to prevent repetitive strain.  Different styles of massage may be used such as deep tissue, myofascial, trigger points or lymphatic drainage to tailor a treatment plan specifically for the client.

Fascia is a thin, resilient elastic type of connective tissue primarily made from collagen that is found everywhere in the body as it covers organs, bones, nerves and muscles.  It covers every muscle and each individual muscle fiber and comes together at the ends to become tendons attaching the muscle to bones.  The therapist sinks into the tissue to find a barrier or restriction and holds a line of tension and moves with the fascia as it releases.  The aim of this it to break down adhesions in muscles, between adjacent muscles and to align the collagen fibers in the direction of pull from origin to insertion of the muscle.

Trigger points are hyper-irritable spots of tight muscle fiber bands where the nerve and muscle meet which can cause pain.  The pain may be locally at the site of dysfunction or refer to other areas such as mimicking headaches, carpal tunnel, and piriformis syndromes to name a few.  This type of therapy aims to identify, resolve, deactivate and elongate the muscles affected by the trigger point.

During pregnancy, many changes such as hormonal, metabolic and physical happen to the body.  While the baby is growing inside the woman, her center of gravity and balance will be affected.  As the belly becomes larger, the lower back may excessively curve forward due to the extra weight causing lower back pain.  When the center of gravity moves forward, the woman may compensate to maintain balance, such as leaning her upper body back to shift her weight over her feet again.  Massage therapy during pregnancy can help to manage pain while strengthening and postural exercises can aid to reduce any problems that arise during this time.  During pregnancy and up to 3 months after birth, the mother will still have relaxin in her system.  This hormone is needed to allow ligaments to relax and soften in the pelvis for childbirth.  Proper bolstering and positioning during the massage and daily activities such as sleeping are required to prevent overstretching of ligaments in other areas of the body.

This type of massage uses long gliding strokes and kneading that are smooth flowing and rhythmic.  The goal is to destress by calming the body, mind, and emotions to bring about a sense of relaxation.

The lymphatic system helps to reduce swelling in tissues.  The lymphatic vessels pick up extra fluid, called lymph, from the tissue and transports it to lymph nodes where it is filtered by white blood cells before returning to the heart and circulatory system.  This system relies on skeletal muscle contraction, gravity, and internal pressure changes from breathing to return lymph to the heart.  Lymphatic drainage is a gentle type of massage using light strokes and rhythmic pumping intended to help encourage natural drainage of lymph to reduce swelling in the tissues.

    1. Take some time out before and after the massage.  That way you are able to enjoy the whole treatment and benefits for longer.
    1. Start relaxing before we arrive, try having a warm shower or bath to start warming up and relaxing the muscles before the session even begins.
    1. Prepare a suitable place for your massage therapists table.  Being able to get to all body parts and not bumping into you or objects makes the massage flow better.   We understand some places may have room constraints though.
    1. Make sure the temperature is comfortable for your massage, a warmer room is desirable in winter times since you will most likely have large areas uncovered such as your back during the treatment.
    1. Turn down the lights a little or close some drapes, bright light can be slightly shocking after relaxing with your eyes closed.  Maybe try lighting a scented candle or use some incense or essential oils of your liking.
  1. Put some music on that you like or that helps you relax, or you can choose to listen to nothing at all.

Is there any additional fees?

The therapist will try to find on-street parking but in the case, there is none the cost of parking will be added on top of the cost of the massage.

Will massage therapy benefit me?

Massage helps aid the body to heal itself naturally.  It is known to help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture and reduce blood pressure. Massage is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety, and create an overall sense of well-being.   With so many benefits massage therapy is for everyone and will be tailored to your specific needs.

Can anyone receive massage therapy?

Massage therapy is appropriate for individuals ranging from infants to the elderly. It can be used to treat a variety of disorders, however, there are some conditions that massage therapy may not be appropriate for or a written referral from your doctor may be needed.

Are there any medical conditions that would make massage inadvisable?

Yes. That’s why it’s imperative that before you begin your session, the practitioner goes over your client history form and ask general health questions. It is very important that you inform the therapist of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor’s care the practitioners may require a written recommendation or approval from your doctor for certain cases.

How often will I need treatment?

This will depend on what the cause of complaint or injury is, how long it has been going on and what the ultimate goals you would like to achieve from the treatments.  For general wellness and health maintenance once a month is recommended.  For chronic or acute injuries more frequent weekly or bi-weekly visits are required to allow the body to heal and maintain the benefits between sessions.  One hour of massage won’t “fix” a chronic problem that has taken months or years to get to the way it is.  Self-care, postural advice and doing the prescribed exercises and stretches will affect how quickly you recover as well.  The therapist will only get to work on you about 1-2 hours in a week, compare that to 168 hours in a week and 40 hours in a work week.  It’s easy to understand why proper posture, work ergonomics and doing the self-care homework is so important to your recovery.

Where Will My Massage Session Take Place?

Your massage session will take place anywhere you are able to fit a massage table up in your home, usually the living room or dining room area. Soft music may be played to help you relax or you may play your own music from your phone if you prefer.  Incense or essential oils may be used if you wish to enhance the experience.

Who Will Perform The Massage?

Your session will be conducted by a professional who has received training in a variety of techniques.  All our therapists have a minimum diploma qualification in remedial massage, are registered with a professional massage association and are private health fund providers.

Do I have to be completely undressed?

No, you can undress to your level of comfort, if you are nervous and unable to relax during the treatment you will not receive optimal benefits from the massage.  Prior to the massage, the practitioner will describe the treatment to be provided to ensure your comfort and to receive consent to the massage.  Some techniques can be done over clothing or sheets but may not be as effective.  The area to be treated will be exposed while proper draping will cover other areas of the body not being treated.  The practitioner will leave the room to allow you to change and cover yourself on the table with a towel or sheet provided.

What do I do during the session?

Make yourself comfortable and try to relax. The therapist will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as turning over or moving your head). Some people like to close their eyes and completely relax while others like to talk.  Everyone has a different tolerance to pressure and this can even vary between different muscle groups in an individual.  Let your practitioner know if you prefer more or less pressure, if you feel a referral from the area being worked on to another part of the body, or anything is uncomfortable such as being too hot or cold or the room being too bright. Having an open line of communication will ensure you receive the best outcome from the massage.

Will it hurt?

The massage should not be painful.  During a remedial treatment, some techniques may cause slight discomfort but should not be painful.  A scale from 1-10 can be used with 10 being pain.  The aim would be to be around a 7-8.  If the body or muscle perceives the pressure as a threat that could cause injury, it will contract protectively which is most likely not what the aim is from the technique or session.  The therapist can use less pressure or try other techniques if you are too uncomfortable.

How will I feel after my massage?

Most people feel very relaxed and a reduction in aches or pains from the original complaint.  Many feel a little slowed down for a short period and then notice an increase of energy, heightened awareness and increased productivity which can last for days.  If you received a remedial treatment it’s not uncommon to be slightly sore the next day- much like a good workout session.  A soak in the tub or hot shower may help ease the muscles.
